Kefalonia Airport Car Rentals

The Kefalonia airport, sometimes referred to as the Cephalonia International Airport, is located on the island of Cephalonia, Greece. Opened in 1971, the airport is located a few mile’s drive to the capital of Argostoli. There are nearly 20 different airlines offering service from the facility, with many of the destinations being offered on a seasonal basis. Travelers are suggested to check with their individual carriers regarding the availability of certain destinations. Over 400,000 travelers pass through the facility annually, much due to the fact that it is a very popular tourist destination, and because it is the only airport serving the popular holiday destination.

Access to the airport can be done by bus, taxi, or personal vehicle. If arriving by private vehicle, there is parking available at the airport. With 80 short-term parking spaces, and 30 long-term parking, space is limited. However, there are spots reserved for those with limited mobility.

If the destination is Kefalonia or the surrounding areas, there are four car hire companies located at the airport. These consist of Hertz, Europcar, Kokolis Travel, and Prima Motors, and they offer a wide variety of vehicles to choose from. Whether drivers are looking for a small and economical option, or a more rugged 4WD Jeep to explore the mountain roads, there is a vehicle type available for all drivers.

The minimum age for drivers vary, depending on the car company and the type of rental vehicle. Some state that the minimum rental age is 21 for a rental car in the mini or economy car groups, and not subject to a Young Drivers Surcharge. However, other car groups require a minimum age of 23 years, and those under the stated age will be required to pay the additional surcharge. If a driver wishes to rent a 4 wheel drive, luxury vehicle, or a full size van, drivers must be 25 years of age. All drivers must have a valid driver's license and have held it for at least 1 year prior to rental. Additionally, drivers must have a clean driving record in order to rent a vehicle.

It is recommended that drivers verify with their car rental company regarding their cross border policy before departing the facility, as some require prior written authorization. Processing of the insurance premium fee associated with cross border travel takes a minimum of 5 working days, plus the additional taxes and surcharges involved make an advance notice a necessity prior to arrival.

During the time of booking, customers can request special equipment that will make their travel experience more comfortable. Such amenities include baby seats, snow chains, rear seat belts, and satellite navigation systems. While driving in Kefalonia, the speed limits for urban areas is 30 mph (50 kph), the open road speed limit is 70 mph (110 kph), and motorways is 75 mph (120 kph).
