The Florence, Peretola or formerly known as the Amerigo Vespucci Airport, is located close to Florence, Italy, and is one of two main airports in the Tuscany region. A relatively small airport, it has one runway, but serves close to 2 million passengers annually. Opened in the early 1930s, the facility has undergone many renovations to keep up with the growing number of tourists that pass through on a regular basis. Some of these upgrades include a longer runway and rebuilding the airport terminal.
Access to the airport can be done many ways, including via the bus service that runs from the central railway station to the airport every half hour. Additional choices include taxi, limousine, and private vehicle. If arriving by personal vehicle, there are two car parks available on the site, short-term with a capacity of 90, and long-term which can accommodate up to 640 vehicles. There is a separate parking area reserved for motorcyclists on site, as well as special parking areas that are equipped to accommodate passengers with limited mobility, complete with elevators and disabled toilet facilities.
If Florence is the destination, there are several car hire companies located in the facility to assist with holiday plans. Located at the arrival terminal, the vehicles offered range from economical options that comfortably seat two adults with very little luggage accompanying them, to larger vans capable of accommodating up to nine adult passengers and luggage. Some rentals have a standard transmission, while others have an automatic one, so it is important to specify when making reservations.
For the smaller vehicles, drivers must have held their license for a minimum of one year without any major traffic violations. Additionally, they must be between 23 and 80 years of age, with a Young Drivers Surcharge applies to drivers aged 21-22 years. However, when renting the larger vans, drivers are required to have held their license for a minimum of 3 years and be between 27 and 80 years of age.
Customers interested in renting a station wagon have the same licensing requirements as that of the large van, but their age range is from 25 to 80 years.
Additional drivers can be added to the car rental lease at the time of reservations, along with increased insurance options, booster seats, satellite navigation systems, ski rack, and snow chains. Due to the varying requirements for rental (age, license, etc.) it is recommended that travelers check with their individual company during booking to ensure that travel issues don’t arise when renting their vehicle.
If rental car drivers desire to explore the surrounding islands by the use of a car ferry, travel is possible, but drivers need to contact the minor islands of Elba, Giglio, Ponza, Capri, Ischia, and Eolie during peak seasons, as the number of cars allowed on these islands is limited.
