Car rentals at Fort Lauderdale Airport

The Fort Lauderdale International airport is located in Broward County Florida, roughly 20 miles (33 km) north of Miami. Serving over 23 million passengers annually, it is one of the fastest growing airports in the United States, and is considered one of the world’s 50 busiest airports as well. Initially operated as a base for the United States Navy, the facility has undergone many renovations in order to keep up with the growing number of passengers. With nearly 30 airlines offering services out of four terminals, the four runways are usually quite busy. Some of the airlines offer destinations on a seasonal basis, so it is suggested that passengers check with their individual airlines to ensure their destination is available during the time desired.

Access to the airport can be done via railway, bus, or personal vehicle. If arriving by private vehicle, there are on site parking options available. There is a multi-level garage complex with over 12,000 spaces. Additional parking is available in the airport economy parking, which offers free shuttles to the terminal 24 hours a day. There are also designated spots for individuals with limited mobility.

If the Fort Lauderdale or the surrounding area is the destination, there are many rental car companies available to choose from, located next Terminal 1 of the airport in the Rental Car Center, with access via a pedestrian bridge. Some of the companies include Budget, Avis, Fox, and Ace, offering a wide variety of vehicles. Whether customers are looking for a compact and economical option, or a sport utility vehicle, there is guaranteed to be a vehicle to fit the needs of all travelers. There are even convertibles available, allowing drivers to take advantage of the sunny weather Florida is known for.

Some of the car rental companies state a minimum age for renters is 19 years, with those under 25 years of age subject to a Young Drivers Surcharge. However, other companies require drivers to be at least 21 years of age. It is suggested that customers check with their individual car rental companies during booking regarding this requirement. There is an additional charge if drivers desire to add another driver to the rental agreement, and any additional driver must be licensed and at least the minimum age required by the individual company. Rental cars originating in Florida can only be driven within the state of Florida.

Available options to add on to rental vehicles include satellite navigation systems, child safety seats, satellite radio receivers, and supplemental insurance. Most of the rental cars within the United States are designated as non-smoking, and fees will be implemented if this regulation is violated. Additionally, vehicles are available with hand controls for drivers with limited mobility.
